Frequently Asked Questions

How to set up floor standing speakers?

Spikes have prevailed in the audio scene. However, we believe that the woofer reproduction should not be reproduced via the floor, but by the loudspeaker. That's why we recommend decoupling our speakers. For this you can order acoustic absorbers from us. If you want to try out other accessories, you can also attach them to the bottom via threads.

How do the WVL speakers sound with transistor or solid-state amplifiers?

There are a number of manufacturers who use semiconductor technology to orient themselves on sound, and not on the number of zeros of the harmonic distortion after the decimal point. We are happy to name a few and make recommendations.

In fact, there are tube devices that make it difficult for many solid state amplifiers. Again, we are happy to name devices and recommended manufacturers.

Are the speakers also available in other versions and colors?

The WVL SON standard is genuine wood veneer. High-gloss black, black blends harmoniously into any environment, and exotic wood veneers are available as option.

The model 12639 SON is also available in white and velvety grey. Our partners might offer special editions, please ask.

What is Bi-Wiring?

An amplifier feeds our speaker with a complex music signal. In order to send the fast and slow signal components even more independently of each other through a cable, the bi-wiring terminal allows us to use different cross-sections and shapes for these different frequencies. Here there is no clear statement about what is better, try and listen for yourself.

Where is the crossover frequency?

The crossover frequency is the frequency at which the music signal is split. All frequencies above the crossover frequency move to the tweeter branch, all lower frequencies to the woofer branch. However, the separation does not take place abruptly, but there is a transitional area. We separate the hearing range into the high-energy bass and fundamental tone range as well as the overtone range. This division is based on measurements, simulations and ultimately through weeks of fine tuning by ear - so you don't have to worry about the exact crossover frequency.

Do you use ribbon tweeters?

Due to the outstanding acoustic properties in the overtone range of all voices and instruments, we have opted for a planar technology. The Air Motion Transformer principle combines excellent impulse behaviour and high efficiency. Our specially developed model works as a real dipole and thus creates a realistic diffuse field.

Is it possible to remove the transparent tweeter attachment?

Yes, in principle the tweeter panel is removable, but this is only for safe transport. The tweeter panel is symmetrical and is held in place by very strong magnets. By replacing the two tweeters, the base width of the overall installation can also be changed. By moving the tweeter forward or backward, an optimal time behavior can be set at the listening position. With the CHICAGO model, the tweeter can also be twisted to adjust the direct-indirect sound percentage at the listening station.

The soundstage of the SON sometimes seems a bit low to me. Do I need stands?

The perceived "height of the soundstage" depends mainly on the playback chain in front of the loudspeaker and the room acoustics. Remember Dynaudio's flagship Consequence or the Confidence and Compound series? Because of the size and height of these speakers, no one ever talked about the "height of the soundstage," even though the tweeter was installed near the ground. It is the small physical size of the SON that makes some people believe the music comes from below. But close your eyes and enjoy the music, you will hear the recording as it was mixed and you will not be deceived by the visual impression.

Informations on the topic of direction-determining frequency bands can be found here

For the human directional hearing in the median plane (front, top, back ...) are responsible for determining frequency bands and not the absolute height arrangement of the tweeter.

If you still want to (actually) raise your speaker now, you should put it a few inches high, not more...

What is the difference between conventional and energized or field-coil loudspeakers?

Simply put: The difference to conventional transducers with permanent magnets is the loudspeaker drive developed by us and manufactured in-house and the associated supply. Since the real difference is of a very technical nature, we include several links here that will lead you to a few explanations. But the main thing for us is the music, and it simply sounds better through our externally excited loudspeakers.
